8 Incredibly Useful Winter Skincare Tips For Dry Weather
Winter is a time like no other. Cozy blankets, warm drinks, and that main-character energy when you walk through the cold in your oversized coat. But while you’re living your best “romanticize-the-season” life, your skin might be over there silently screaming for help. Dry air, cold wind, and indoor heating are a tag team from skincare hell, and your skin barrier? She’s barely hanging on.
Don’t worry though.
With a few simple changes (and maybe some self-care moments in between), you can keep your skin soft, hydrated, and glowing all season long; without breaking the bank or spending hours in front of a mirror.
Table of Contents
1. Hydration Starts from the Inside
- Drink more water. Yes, it’s cliché, but evidence of dehydration typically shows up on your face faster than anything else.
- Add electrolytes or herbal teas. Warm teas (like chamomile or green tea) are hydrating and comforting.
- Eat your water too. Foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and soups help your skin stay plump.
Why it matters: Internal hydration keeps your skin cells full, helping your moisturizer actually do its job.
Long-term benefit: Fewer fine lines, more glow, and a complexion that doesn’t feel like sandpaper.
2. Switch to a Gentle Cleanser
- Avoid foaming or stripping cleansers. These sometimes make dry skin worse.
- Opt for cream or oil-based cleansers. They clean without robbing your skin of moisture.
- Try double cleansing at night if you wear makeup or sunscreen: oil first, then gentle cleanser.
Good habit to form: Wash your face only twice a day—over-cleansing can sometimes make your skin worse.
3. Moisturize Like You Mean It
- Apply moisturizer while your skin is damp. Lock in that precious hydration before it escapes.
- Look for ingredients like:
- Hyaluronic acid (hydrates)
- Ceramides (strengthens skin barrier)
- Shea butter or squalane (seals moisture)
- Nighttime tip: Use a thicker cream or even a sleeping mask to trap moisture while you dream about warmer weather.
Fun Tip: Think of your moisturizer as an emotional support blanket but for your face.

4. Exfoliate… but Gently
- Once or twice a week is plenty if you have sensitive or dry skin. Over-exfoliating in winter is like sanding dry wood… it won’t end well.
- Choose chemical exfoliants (like lactic acid) over harsh scrubs.
- Follow up with moisturizer immediately.
Long-term benefit: Smooth skin = better product absorption and fewer breakouts from clogged pores.
5. Add a Humidifier to Your Space
- Especially if you live with heaters or central air.
- Bonus: Your plants will love you too.
Why it helps: It keeps moisture in the air (and your skin). No more waking up feeling like you’ve been sleeping in the Sahara.
6. Don’t Skip Sunscreen (Yes, Even in Winter)
- Snow reflects UV rays, meaning your skin is still exposed.
- Go for hydrating formulas with SPF 30+ for everyday use.
Good habit: Keep sunscreen near your moisturizer so it becomes a non-negotiable step.

7. Treat Your Lips, Hands & Feet Too
- Use a thick lip balm at night.
- Keep a small hand cream in your bag. You’ll thank yourself later.
- Use a foot cream or body butter before bed and throw on some socks.
Why it matters: Your skin barrier extends beyond your face. Show the rest of your body some love too.
8. Simplify, Don’t Overload
- Winter isn’t the time to try five new serums at once.
- Stick to a solid cleanse → hydrate → protect routine.
- Let your skin breathe and balance.
Long-term benefit: A calmer, more resilient skin barrier and fewer “why is my face burning?” moments.

Winter skincare doesn’t need to be complicated; it’s really about listening to your skin (and maybe giving it a little extra TLC). Keep things simple and consistent. Remember: skincare isn’t about striving for perfection; it’s about maintenance and self-care.
So light your candle, make a cup of tea, slap on that moisturizer, and remind yourself that you’re not alone in your dry skin struggles; we’re just in our winter era of self-care. ❄️

I forget to use sunscreen in the winter & need to be better at it, especially since it is sunny in SoCal. My skin is dry, so I will consider using a humidifier while I sleep.
These are great tips for keeping skin happy and hydrated through the winter. I really enjoy the emphasis on habits that make a difference
Yes, I am so with you. I use sunscreen all year round, we all should. Exfoliation is one of those things I have somehow fall out of the habit of doing as part of my routine. I need to start doing it weekly again, it really does help skin look brighter and fresher. A good thick moisturiser at night makes such a difference especially as the heating is on with the weather being so cold at the moment.
I definitely need to do more, especially since it’s been very very cold lately. The tips are amazing, thank you so much.
I am pretty good at my skincare routine. But I must admit that I always forget that I should be using sunscreen in the winter months.

This is such a great list of tips. I can’t believe I lived on this planet for over 40 years before I learned that skin should be damp when you apply moisturizer.
