10 Simple Wellness Habits To Start In January

10 simple wellness habits for a gentle, balanced approach to health, creativity, and self-care

January often arrives with a loud message: reinvent yourself, do more, be better.
But for many of us, especially women who value creativity, comfort, independence, and strive to live a healthier lifestyle, true wellness doesn’t only come from drastic overhauls or rigid routines. It can also come from small, intentional habits that support the life you actually want to live.

I’ve mentioned this before, but a long time ago I decided to change my wording and approach to new years. The words/act of “new years resolutions” can bring a lot of pressure to hit the ground running. And for some people, if they don’t start their goals immediately or fail, they tend not to pick it back up or simply say “oh I will just aim to start next year”. I’ve noticed my mindset has changed a bit since I have started saying “new years intentions”. It makes me feel like it’s ok to have a gradual adjustment or approach to my goals.

Also, as someone who is accustomed to living in pain, having a healthy mindset of improving my overall health and wellness while acknowledging that even when I have a bad/off day, I am still alright, is extremely important. Implementing some of these simple wellness habits into your routine should help you be well on your way for your health & self-care journey!

If you love cozy productive morning or having time for nourishing food without restriction, and a lifestyle that balances ambition with rest, this guide is for you. (In all honesty, half of me admires this type of routine, but the other half of me is thinking “forget that, give me my sleep!)

These simple wellness habits are designed to help you start the year grounded, energized, and aligned without burnout or pressure.

10 Simple Wellness Habits

1. Start Your Mornings Right

Wellness culture often glorifies intense morning routines, but not everyone thrives on 5 a.m. workouts or hour-long rituals. It’s great to be extra productive in the mornings, however, if you fullheartedly feel that is not your style then so be it! Sometimes, a more “gentle morning” approach can set the tone for balance throughout the day and work better for certain people.

Simple ideas to do this:

  • Wake up 10–15 minutes earlier to sit quietly with yourself and mentally prep for the day
  • Read a few pages of a book or journal your daily to-do list, instead of scrolling
  • If you are not up for an intense workout, at least stretch lightly or do slow, intuitive movements
  • Open a window or take a quick shower to help wake yourself up

This habit can support mental clarity, lower stress, and create space for intention (it’s especially valuable for creatives and deep thinkers).

2. Build a “Comfortable” Movement Routine

As I stated earlier, exercise doesn’t have to be intense to be effective. You can also focus on movement that feels grounding, enjoyable, and sustainable. (Any type of movement/exercise is absolutely better than nothing at all)

Try:

  • Morning walks while listening to audiobooks or podcasts
  • Yoga, pilates, or stretching at home
  • Light strength training or low-impact workouts
  • Dancing around your living room

The goal doesn’t have to be pushing yourself to the limit on a daily basis. It’s supporting your body so you feel strong, capable, and energized enough to live fully.

3. Nourish Yourself Without Restriction

January diet culture can feel overwhelming. Instead of just completely cutting foods out, focus on adding nourishment in.

Wellness-forward habits include:

A nourished body supports creativity, focus, emotional stability, and long-term health without the mental exhaustion of restriction or unintentionally starting a yo-yo diet.

4. Create a Daily “Solo Reset” Moment

If you’re someone like me, who enjoys their own company, this habit can be deeply restorative. A solo reset can be a non-negotiable daily moment just for you.

Ideas:

  • Reading before bed
  • Journaling or brain-dump writing
  • Watching a comfort show (risky if you’re also a binge-watcher like me)
  • Taking your time for a more extensive skincare routine
  • Sitting in silence and letting your mind and thoughts settle

This habit can help regulate your nervous system and remind you that rest is productive too.

5. Protect Your Creative Energy

For anybody of course, but especially for creatives or artists, wellness habits shouldn’t just be based on physical tasks, it’s heavily mental and emotional. January is the perfect time to create space for inspiration for the year.

Try:

  • Setting boundaries around social media consumption
  • Scheduling weekly creative time (writing, reading, brainstorming)
  • Keeping a notebook for ideas instead of forcing productivity without inspiration
  • Consuming content that inspires rather than overwhelms

Creativity flourishes when you feel safe, rested, and mentally spacious and open.

6. Simplify Your Self-Care Routine

Self-care doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. In fact, simpler routines are often more sustainable.

Focus on:

  • Consistent skincare rather than complex routines
  • Regular showers or baths with the occasional spa-like pamper days
  • Stretching before bed
  • Maintaining a clean, cozy living space

Consistency beats perfection every time.

7. Support Your Mental Wellness Intentionally

Mental wellness is foundational, especially during the darker winter months.

Gentle habits to try:

  • Limiting doom-scrolling or negative news intake (extremely difficult these days, I know)
  • Writing down worries before bed, letting go, and waking up fresh the next day
  • Practicing gratitude without forcing positivity
  • Seeking therapy, journaling, or reflective practices

Taking care of your mind allows you to show up as your most present, creative, and grounded self.

8. Reframe Goals as Intentions

Instead of rigid resolutions, think in terms of intentions; guiding principles that support your lifestyle.

Examples:

  • “I want to feel more grounded this year.”
  • “I want to prioritize health without a strict or negative approach.”
  • “I want to make space for myself and prioritize rest.”

This mindset encourages growth without pressure and allows flexibility as life changes.

9. Make Your Environment Feel Like a Sanctuary

Your surroundings deeply affect your wellness. January is a great time to romanticize your everyday environment, clean up or decorate your space, and give yourself the safe and cozy space you deserve.

Simple upgrades:

  • Declutter – Clean – Organize
  • Cozy blankets, candles, or soft lighting
  • A designated workspace or a reading or writing corner
  • Keeping books visible and accessible
  • Playing calming music while doing daily tasks

A comforting space supports calm, creativity, and emotional well-being.

10. Practice Self-Compassion Daily

Above all, wellness is about how you treat or speak to yourself. New year resolutions can bring comparison, pressure, and unrealistic expectations; self-compassion is the antidote.

Practice:

  • Talking to yourself the way you would a close friend
  • Allowing rest without guilt
  • Accepting slow progress
  • Honoring where you are right now

True health and wellness includes kindness, awareness, and appreciation to yourself.

Reminder

You don’t need to change everything about yourself to have a meaningful start to the new year. Sometimes the most powerful shifts come from doing less but doing it gradually.

These simple wellness habits are not about becoming someone new or trying to specifically transform yourself into one of the influencers you see on social media.

They’re about supporting the person you already are; aiming to become the best version of yourself.

Let this year be about comfortable and healthy adjustments, and better self-love and self-discovery. It’s your life, you’re allowed to customize it to your liking!!

Having wellness habits incorporated into a daily routine can have a significantly positive impact on both our physical and mental health. Allowing time for a relaxed bath or shower daily rather than rushed, setting up boundaries for social media and for people we know etc are important ways to help relax body and mind and protect our mental wellbeing. These tips are all great and similar to those I would advise my patients.

I do really enjoy having half an hour to myself in the morning before everyone is up. I enjoy the peace of a cup of tea in the quiet. It is my own little ritual.

Aw, this was such a lovey read! I felt myself nodding along with so much of it! I’m big on no.1. I can’t wake up at 5am, but I do set my alarm 45 mins earlier than the kids get up so I can have a bit of quiet time to myself. My self care routine is really simplified too. I think there can be this biiiiiig pressure on nailing a self care routine, and it usually having 101 different steps. Scaling things back is so much more manageable, and rewarding because it’s achievable.
