Travel Packing Tips

Coordinate + Plan In Advance

  • Knowing the length of your trip, the weather, and what activities you will or will not be doing, will give you an idea of what you need to pack and how much. So before you even touch your suitcase, take some time to plan out your outfits for each day of your trip.
  • You can mix and match versatile pieces that can be dressed up or down to create multiple looks without taking up extra space.

Roll > Fold

  • Rolling your clothes not only saves space but also lessens the bulk and helps prevent wrinkles, allowing you to fit more into your luggage or backpack effortlessly.
  • If you have never tried rolling before, give it a shot! You may be surprised at how much more you can fit.

Packing Cubes/Dividers/Bags

  • Having something in your suitcase to keep things compact and separated is a game-changer when it comes to staying organized on the go.
  • Separate your items by type or outfit to keep your suitcase tidy and your belongings easily accessible throughout your trip.

Choose Dual-Purpose Items

  • Opt for items that serve multiple functions to save both space and weight in your luggage. For example, a jacket that turns into a pillow or pillow that opens up into a blanket

Choose The Right Luggage

  • Depending on your trip or what items you are traveling with, having the right bag can make all the difference.
  • Backpacks are typically used for trips that will involve a lot of walking and movement like touristy/sightseeing trips or adventurous trips that include physical activities like hiking. Suitcases would be best suited for business trips or trips where you won’t be carrying much on your person day to day. *Make sure to check your airline bag policy beforehand

Maximize Your Carry-On

  • Make the most of your carry-on by packing essential items like toiletries, electronics, medical items, and a change of clothes. This ensures you’ll have everything you need in case your checked luggage gets lost or delayed.

Document Copies + Emergency Cash

  • These days most people use their phone for tickets, payment, or identification. But it is always a great idea to have a copy of all the important documents you are traveling with at a separate location.
  • Along with any documents, you should always have some emergency cash or a credit card in a different location from your wallet. (Different bag or hotel safe, and a picture on your phone)

Pack Smart With Toiletries

  • Instead of lugging full-sized bottles of body or hair products, invest in travel-sized containers or solid alternatives. You can also minimize liquids by opting for multi-purpose products like a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner.

Pill Organizer

  • Yes pill organizers were made for pills and they are pretty convenient to use if you need them. However, they are also great for storing other small random items you are traveling with including keeping your jewelry tangle-free.

Limit Shoes

  • Limiting the pairs of shoes you travel with would save up a lot of space considering how bulky most are. Wearing your bulkiest pair while you travel would allow you to sneak in more items when packing.
  • Pack versatile shoes that will work for both nice dinners or a casual stroll through the city.

Utilize Every Inch of Space

  • Get creative with how you pack your luggage to maximize every inch of space available. Stuff socks inside shoes, roll up belts and accessories, and use every pocket and compartment to your advantage.

Cords + Portable Charger

  • Traveling with electronics isn’t as simple as throwing your laptop in your bag and being on your way. There’s been a time or two when I packed my iPad or laptop and forgot the charger. Having the charging cord and a protective case is just as important.
  • It would be good to use one of your travel totes for all your electronic cords, portable charger, and converter (if needed). They have ties that wrap around cords or bags that come with separate cable sections to keep everything organized.

Essential Medications + First Aid

  • If you have any health-related items like medications or devices you need to travel with, it’s a good idea to keep them organized and close.
  • Always keep these things in your carry-on because you never want to be in the position of having packed it in your checked luggage and needing it or your luggage being lost. *A mini first aid kit is always handy to have, it’s better to have it and not need it than vice versa.

Downsize Your Beauty Routine

  • While it may be tempting to pack your entire skincare and makeup collection, streamline your beauty routine by only bringing the essentials. Look for travel-sized versions of your favorite products or consider investing in multi-use items like a tinted moisturizer with SPF.

    Layer Up For Travel Days

    • Wear your bulkiest items, such as jackets or boots, on travel days to free up space in your luggage. Layering also allows you to adapt to changing temperatures throughout your journey without overpacking.

Staying Clean & Safe On The Go

    • This may not apply to everyone because a lot of people don’t care, but for my fellow germaphobes, traveling with a pouch of smaller cleaning products will put you at ease.
    • I always travel with at least hand sanitizer, hand wipes, and disinfectant spray and wipes. Going as far as traveling with your pillow case and shower shoes if you don’t fully trust the thorough cleaning of hotels. (A rolled-up pillow case and flip-flops won’t take up much space at all)

    Leave Room for Souvenirs

    • Leave a bit of extra space in your luggage for souvenirs and mementos you’ll inevitably collect along the way.
    • Consider packing a collapsible bag or duffel for overflow items to ensure you stay within airline weight limits on your return journey.

    Laundry + Dirty Clothes

    • Depending on how long you are gone or where you are staying, you may not have the chance to do laundry. I always travel with an empty bag that I am able to put my dirty clothes in throughout the trip so as not to “compromise” anything else.

    5 4 3 2 1 Packing Method

    • 5 Tops – 4 Bottoms – 3 Accessories (hats/belts/sunglasses) – 2 Paris of Shoes – 1 Dress or Swim Wear

    Valuables

    • Leave anything valuable at home. It’s not worth the risk of losing something special to you or possibly having it stolen. Packing should only involve the items necessary.

    Research

    • If you haven’t already, make sure you research what area you are going to. You would be surprised at how many popular locations have one big touristy spot and then if you step outside that area it can be vastly different and unsafe.
    • This is more of a general travel tip, but being informed can affect some of your packing decisions.

    Extra Travel Packing Tips:

    • Pack light
    • Pack the heaviest stuff on the bottom
    • Have a luggage tag
    • Invest in a tracker device
    • Trip insurance

By implementing these travel packing tips, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the art of efficient packing and enjoying stress-free travels wherever your adventures take you.
